Does an AI Girlfriend Count as Cheating?

Relationships & mental health

Poll a hundred couples and the answers run from "it's just a game" to "it's an affair." That split is telling: cheating here is a line each couple draws for itself, not a fact that sits out there waiting.

It feels like a brand-new dilemma, but the shape is ancient. Every couple ends up deciding for itself what is okay with flirting, porn, close friends and online chats. An AI girlfriend simply adds one more item to a negotiation that was already underway.

What the public thinks

Match's 2025 Singles in America survey, conducted with the Kinsey Institute, put the share of US singles who have used AI as a romantic companion at 16%, rising to a third of Gen Z. Asked if an AI boyfriend or girlfriend is cheating, 40% answered yes.

That is a big minority and no consensus. In a typical couple, one person could easily see it as harmless while the other does not, and neither would be wrong. They are just carrying different agreements around in their heads.

Why couples land in different places

Range of ways couples label an AI companion, from entertainment like a video game, to fantasy like porn or romance novels, to emotional intimacy, to an affair

Its spot on the scale depends on what a couple already treats as private, shared or exclusive.

People tend to slot an AI companion next to something they already have an opinion about:

  • "It's a game." Characters, scenes, roleplay: no more a relationship than a dating sim is.
  • "It's fantasy." Comparable to porn or erotic fiction: private, not about the partner, and fine or not fine depending on how the couple already feels about those.
  • "It's emotional closeness." Confiding your feelings, getting comfort and looking forward to the next chat looks a lot like a close bond, and for some people emotional exclusivity is part of monogamy.
  • "It's an affair." Hidden, sexual, ongoing, with real time and money going in. For some, it makes no difference that the other side is software.

What partners actually mind

In practice the technology is rarely the issue. It is usually one of these:

ComplaintThe reason it hurtsThe remedy
Hiding itBeing surprised by it feels like a lie, whatever the app was forCome clean yourself, early
HoursAn evening chatting is an evening apartLimit it to time that is truly yours
Emotional ventingYour feelings land in the app, not with your partnerBring major matters to your partner first
Explicit chatsFeels like a betrayal if it never came upSpell out what you do with the app
SpendingSubscriptions and credits add up and can look concealedCount it in the shared budget like anything else

Most of these can be fixed without deleting the app. Secrecy is the exception: it makes nearly every other item feel like a broken promise.

One test that settles most cases

Ask yourself one thing: could my partner sit beside me and read the past seven days of chats without me flinching?

If so, you are probably within your own agreement, and the talk with your partner is mostly about filling them in. If not, whatever makes you uneasy is the thing to discuss, whether that is the content, the feelings or the hours.

Raising it

  1. Choose a quiet moment. Skip the middle of a fight and the minutes after being caught.
  2. Describe it plainly. "I use an app where I chat with an AI character, mostly at night, and sometimes it turns flirty."
  3. Explain what you get from it. Stress relief, fun, curiosity, loneliness while they travel. Honesty here makes everything after it easier.
  4. Find out where they draw the line, and listen. Casual chatting may be fine with them while explicit scenes are not, or vice versa.
  5. Agree on something concrete. No NSFW, no venting about the relationship, only when you are apart, or no limits at all. A couple that writes down even a single rule fights about it much less later.

Our guide to telling people about your AI companion goes deeper on that conversation, including what to do if it goes badly.

When your partner is the one using it

Feeling hurt, puzzled or even measured against a machine is normal. Before you decide what it means, ask what it does for them, because many people use companions for reasons that have nothing to do with their partner. Then say clearly where your own line is. You are entitled to one, even if other couples would not draw it.

The honest takeaway

An AI girlfriend is neither cheating nor harmless by default. It is a new thing that couples must fit into the agreements they already have. The couples who manage it well do not have the loosest rules. They spoke up before it turned into a secret.

Frequently asked questions

Does chatting with an AI girlfriend app count as cheating?

Only when it crosses an understanding you and your partner share, spoken or assumed. Some couples file it under fantasy, alongside porn or romance novels. Others see emotional closeness with anyone or anything else as a betrayal. Talk to each other to settle it, since no search result can.

What tends to bother partners most?

Seldom the software. The usual complaints are secrecy, time pulled away from the relationship, money spent, feelings shared with the app instead of the partner, and sexual content they never knew about.

Do I need to tell my partner?

If you are hiding it because you think it would hurt them, you already have your answer about whether it matters to them. Bringing it up early, before they stumble on it, almost always goes better.
