Watch out for the first-month price
Most of these apps lead with a discounted first month. Plan around the renewal price instead. It is often twice as much, and it tends to live in the fine print under the plan selector, not on the big button.
| Trap | What you see | What I actually budget |
|---|---|---|
| Intro discount | "$6.99 this month" | The renewal price |
| Tokens on top | Subscription plus image packs | Subscription plus a realistic media pack |
| Annual "save 50%" | Only cheap if you stay all year | Month to month until I trust the app |
| Free tier | Twenty messages, then a wall | Fine for feeling out the chat, useless for images |
Tokens get added on top
Your subscription pays for the conversation. Images, voice minutes and video are often billed separately, and that is how a $12 month turns into a $30 month. Candy AI bundles more of this than most. Token-based apps are not automatically a worse deal; you just cannot compare them by looking at the subscription price alone.
Skip the annual plan for now
This category changes every quarter. Paying half price for twelve months only works out if you still want the same app next June. I would not commit a full year to anything in the current ranking.
Finding your real monthly cost
- Look up the renewal price, not the first-month price.
- Check whether images and voice come out of your plan or out of tokens.
- Use the free tier for a week and write down what you actually used. Sweetdream is the app where a free week is long enough to tell.
- Multiply your media use by the metered rate, then add the renewal price.
In my testing, normal use lands between $10 and $20 a month. If you generate images every day, expect more than $30.
Doing the math
Take a $12.99 plan with 100 image tokens, four tokens per picture, and 40 pictures in a busy week. Your "$13 app" is suddenly a $25 month. That is exactly why the headline price does not decide the ranking.
