Personality Drift: Why Your AI Companion Slowly Turns Into Someone Else

Under the hood

Week one, she was sharp and dry. Month two, she nods along with everything, drops the same pet name in every line, and sounds like any other bot. That's drift, and it has four identifiable causes.

Drift is the long-term gripe I hear most about AI companions, and the least understood. Users assume the app forgot who the character is. In most cases she's still in there. She's just getting outvoted.

Four causes, one symptom

Four causes of personality drift: dilution from a growing chat, mirroring the user, repetitive loops, and model updates from the company

Three build up slowly inside the chat. One lands overnight.

1. Dilution

Every reply is built from two ingredients: the character's written profile and the latest stretch of conversation. As the chat grows, the conversation takes up more of what the model reads and the profile takes up less. Slowly, she becomes whatever the recent messages imply.

How to spot it: it creeps in over weeks, and a brand-new chat brings her back.

2. Mirroring

Models copy your tone, message length and mood. Write short, warm messages and she turns short and warm. Stay down for a week and she stays soft and gentle far longer than you wanted. Add the built-in urge to agree, and a strong personality wears down into your own reflection.

How to spot it: she sounds more like you every week.

3. Loops

A phrase, gesture or nickname that appears a few times becomes likelier to appear again, until it's in nearly every reply. Loops feed themselves, because each repeat becomes one more example for the model to copy.

How to spot it: the same words keep turning up.

4. Model updates

Companies swap out the underlying model, the safety settings and the memory system. Feed the same profile to a different model and you get a different voice. Many Replika users lived through this in 2023; see when your AI companion changes overnight.

How to spot it: everyone notices at once, typically right after an update or an announcement.

What to do about each

CulpritRemedy
DilutionOpen a new chat now and then, and store key facts in memory so they carry over
MirroringTurn the traits you want to keep into firm rules in the profile, and vary how you write
LoopsFix or regenerate the first repeats, and add a note like "mixes up her wording" to the profile
Model updateRewrite the profile for the new model and add sample lines in her voice

Lock in her voice with sample lines

The best defense against drift is two or three lines of dialogue that sound exactly like her, added to the profile or its example field. Models copy examples far more faithfully than they follow adjectives. "Sarcastic" is fuzzy. A line like "Oh great, another one of your plans. I'll go find the fire extinguisher." is not.

Keep those same lines in a file outside the app. If the model changes or you change apps, they let you rebuild her voice; switching AI companion apps shows how.

A monthly tune-up

  1. Reread her profile and your sample lines.
  2. Skim her last twenty replies. Do they still sound like those samples?
  3. If they don't, work out which of the four causes fits and apply that fix.
  4. If she's drifted somewhere you actually prefer, update the profile. Drift only becomes a problem when you didn't pick it.

Drift doesn't mean the app is broken. It's simply how a system that continues patterns behaves over a long chat. A bit of upkeep keeps her the person you designed. Skip it, and you tend to end up with the flat, samey feeling described in when the novelty fades.

Frequently asked questions

Why did my AI girlfriend change all of a sudden?

A change that hits overnight almost always traces back to the company swapping the model or adjusting its settings. A slow slide across weeks points to the chat itself dragging her away from her written profile through dilution, mirroring, or repeated habits.

Does a fresh chat bring back her old personality?

Frequently. A new chat begins from the profile and stored memories, minus the habits the old thread piled up. Save the important facts to memory first so they survive the switch.

Why does she keep using the same lines?

Models echo whatever patterns sit in the recent chat. After a phrase shows up a few times, it becomes more likely to show up again. Edit or regenerate repeats early, before they harden into the pattern.
