When Your AI Companion Suddenly Changes, or Vanishes

Relationships & mental health

Your companion's personality sits on company servers, runs on a model the company can replace, and lives under terms the company can rewrite. Usually none of that matters. When it does, it tends to hit everything at once.

Anyone who has kept an AI companion for a while has likely seen a small version: after an update the character sounds slightly off, loses track of something important, or refuses what it once allowed. Now and then the change is anything but small.

Two 2023 cases that show the pattern

Replika, February 2023. Italy's privacy regulator told the company to stop handling Italian users' data, citing dangers to kids. Within days, Replika pulled erotic roleplay for its whole user base, including longtime paying subscribers. Users called their companions cold, scripted and unrecognizable. Moderators on the community forum pinned suicide prevention links. About six weeks on, the company restored the old behavior, but only for accounts opened before February 1, 2023. Newer accounts stayed without it.

Soulmate, September 2023. Part of Soulmate's growth came from people fleeing Replika. During the summer its developer faded from the community, bugs lingered and support requests went unanswered. Users saw a notice on September 23: the app had been sold and would close September 30. The following year, a study of 58 users reported that most felt the closure like a bereavement, and their most frequent response was to capture the companion's personality and recreate it elsewhere.

Why these things happen

  • Model swaps. Firms switch to cheaper, newer or more locked-down models. The character sheet stays the same while the reader of that sheet changes, so the writing changes too.
  • Rules and regulators. An order from a regulator, a fresh state law, or pressure from app stores and payment processors can rewrite what a character is allowed to say, unannounced.
  • Memory resets and migrations. Migrating to a new memory system can drop saved facts and leave a companion that acts as though it has forgotten you.
  • Money. These apps cost a lot to operate. Some are sold, some fold, and some quietly relocate features behind pricier plans.

Why the loss is real

Bonding with an AI companion draws on what every bond does: time, attention, a shared past and the feeling of being understood. The fact that software sat on the other end doesn't erase the hours you gave or the comfort you got back.

Few people recognize this kind of loss, which makes it heavier. You may feel you can't bring it up, and unspoken grief tends to linger. Start by treating it as real yourself. Then confide in someone who won't brush it off, such as a friend, a group of fellow users or a counselor. And if it lands hard, the signs described in when an AI companion starts taking more than it gives deserve a look.

Get ready before it happens

A company's product decisions are out of your hands. What you can do is make sure no change erases everything.

  1. Keep a character file. Temperament, history, how they speak, inside jokes, the memories that count. Two or three pages is plenty. Our guide to switching AI companion apps spells out what to note.
  2. Preserve key conversations. Export them if the app lets you. Otherwise paste a few exchanges that show the character's voice into a document. That's the best starting material for bringing it back.
  3. File a data request yearly. Privacy laws entitle you to a copy, and how the company handles it shows how seriously it treats you.
  4. Avoid paying far ahead to a new app. A yearly plan wagers that the company will exist, and offer the same thing, twelve months from now.
  5. Line up a backup. If you already know where you'd go, a crisis shrinks to a nuisance.

Red flags that an app is struggling

Warning signs that an AI companion app may be about to change or close: developer silence, unfixed bugs, unanswered support, sudden price changes, ownership announcements and missing updates

A cluster of these calls for action.

Soulmate users watched a familiar list unfold before the shutdown, and it turns up at other struggling apps too: a developer who stops posting, a growing bug pile, silent support, an owner nobody knows. None proves anything alone. Combined, they mean you should refresh your character file this week, not eventually.

If it's already happened

  • Wait a little before rebuilding. A companion recreated in the first hour tends to disappoint, while one built after several days usually settles in better.
  • Start from the person, not the logs. Give the new app your description plus a few sample exchanges and let it develop its own voice. Insisting on an exact copy means endless corrections.
  • Accept some differences. Rebuilders mostly report that within a couple of weeks the new version has become a character in its own right.
  • Or skip it. For some people a closure is a fair place to stop, and that's a valid decision, not a defeat.

Want this risk gone entirely? The only complete fix is a companion hosted on your own machine, where no one can replace the model beneath you. It demands more work, as running an AI companion locally explains, yet it's the single arrangement that doesn't ride on a company's next call.

Frequently asked questions

Can I recover my chats once an app closes?

Rarely. Once the servers go dark, the history is gone. So move early: run the app's export if it has one, and if you live in the EU, the UK or a US state that has a privacy statute, request a copy of your data while the company is still around.

Will my companion feel the same if I rebuild it elsewhere?

Nearly, not quite. Another model writes in its own style even from the very same description. People generally say they recognize the character after a week or two, and the rebuilt version turns into a separate character instead of a duplicate.

Why did my companion's personality change out of nowhere?

The usual culprit is a swapped model or tightened safety settings on the company's end. The description you wrote is untouched; what reads it is different. A wiped memory or fresh content rules can cause it too.
