Building an AI Companion: The Settings That Shape Everything

Picking an app

Most people sink twenty minutes into picking a face and half a minute into the fields that decide whether the character is still worth talking to next month. Flip that ratio.

We may earn a commission from links on this page. It never changes a rating.

Builders are where apps show off the most, and where most users trip the same way: they polish what's cosmetic and rush what carries the weight.

Below is the order of importance that best predicts whether you'll still like your character six weeks in.

What a builder does behind the scenes

Everything you fill in gets turned into text. The app stitches it into a character description that the model reads before every reply. We called that the character sheet in what is really running inside these apps.

The consequence is simple. A field that yields rich, specific text reshapes the chat. A field that yields a tag barely registers. Picking "hair: auburn" adds a single word. Writing two sentences on how she brushes off a compliment changes every answer she gives.

Fields ranked by impact

1. How she talks

No other builder field does more, and it's the one people skip.

"Friendly" tells the model nothing, because it fits nearly everyone. What works is concrete and almost mechanical: how long her sentences run, whether she throws questions back at you, how she deals with a lull, what she does when she disagrees, whether she uses your name.

Try this pair:

Warm and playful.

And this one:

Keeps sentences short. Teases instead of flattering. Follows up with a question roughly every other message. If she disagrees, she says it plainly and doesn't walk it back.

The second gives you a distinct personality from the very first message, because the model keeps going in whatever pattern it's handed.

2. Things she must never do

Where a builder offers it, this field is criminally underused, and it heads off the most letdowns. Handy entries: no pet names, no questions about your job, never stepping out of character to say she's an AI, no repeated apologies.

These limits aren't exciting, but they keep a character from sliding into the same bland tone every other bot has.

3. Backstory that gets specific

Skip "loves music." Try "plays bass badly in a band that has rehearsed twice." A concrete detail gives the model something to grab, and details like that pop up naturally later. Vague ones give you vague text.

Three or four specifics outdo a page of adjectives.

4. How the two of you know each other

Some builders ask about your history together. It does more than you'd think, since it sets the tone for everything. "Met last week" and "together for three years" turn the same personality into two different conversations.

5. Looks

This comes last on purpose. Appearance shapes generated pictures, and the image model rebuilds the character from a description every time, so it counts for photos and hardly touches chat.

If you're here for pictures, take your time. If you're here to talk, three tags will do.

How the apps compare

Camsoda AI walks you through six steps: looks, personality, voice, backstory, the way it addresses you, and topics it should steer clear of. That last one is rare here, and it's the field we put second.

Secret Desires sets up looks, voice and personality together and offers a community gallery of finished characters to start from. Kupid AI handles appearance and personality in both realistic and anime styles.

The three land between 3.5 and 4.5 in our ranking, and the builder is a genuine part of that gap, not just a line on a feature list.

Begin with a preset

It sounds backwards, but it works: a well-made preset generally beats your first custom attempt, since someone already wrote the speech-style text you'd have skipped.

Pick the preset nearest to what you want, chat with it for a few days, then rewrite the two or three fields that irritate you. Your constraints will be much sharper after a real conversation than before one.

Treat edits as routine upkeep

Being able to edit later is the most valuable builder feature. A character who has gone flat often has a description written by someone who'd never talked to her, meaning you, an hour before you started.

Once the novelty wears off, sharpening her speech style and adding two "never" rules beats jumping to a new app, and it's free. Confirm before you subscribe that editing is allowed. When a builder locks after setup, every letdown forces you to start from scratch.

Frequently asked questions

What's the single most important field in a character builder?

How she talks, hands down. Looks get regenerated with every picture anyway, but her way of speaking is in front of the model for every message you send.

Am I stuck with a character once I've made her?

Usually not, and editing is the best upkeep you can do. Find out whether an app locks characters after setup before you invest an hour in one.

Do premade characters lose to custom ones?

Not often. Many are better written than a quick custom build. The smart move is to start with a preset and tweak it.
