All eight apps we track offer a free tier. On its own that tells you very little, because "free" describes two entirely different kinds of product.
Two flavors of free
The capped product. Use it as long as you like. Text chat and memory both work, and the restrictions fall on media and on how quickly you can send messages. You could stay on it for months and form a real opinion of the app.
The teaser. A few messages or a few days, and then you hit a wall. Its job is to show off the interface, not the product. Whatever you decide about memory or consistency from it is a guess, since neither one shows up in a day.
Sorting them takes roughly ten minutes. Use the app, bump into a limit, and read what the wall says. A note about a daily allowance means you're on the first kind. A prompt to upgrade in order to continue means the second.
What gets rationed, and the reason
The pattern is the same across the category because the costs underneath are the same.
- Images cost the operator money each time. They're always capped, and usually strictly.
- Voice is counted per minute or per message, and it's often the first feature to go.
- Video, when it's offered at all, is effectively paid-only.
- Message volume is limited by count or by speed, though far more generously than media.
- Memory depth is sometimes shallower on free plans, so a free tier is a weak way to judge the very feature that matters most.
That last item is the trap. Judge an app's memory from its free plan and you may conclude it's worse than it really is.
Free tiers that deserve your time
Of the apps we test, Sweetdream has the one free tier that feels like a real product instead of a demo. That's part of why it holds second place in our ranking with a 4.5, even though its $10.00 paid plan is the cheapest of the group.
Replika merits an unpaid two weeks for another reason. Its free experience is the classic version of this category, and if that leaves you cold, pricier apps are unlikely to change your mind.
Kupid AI offers free chat right after signup, so it's an inexpensive way to see whether its character builder suits you.
Getting the most out of a free plan
Spend your first session on conversation only. Don't generate a single image, because you'll burn through the cap and learn nothing about the writing.
Tell it one real detail about yourself on day one, then ask about it on day three. That one experiment reveals more than any feature list.
Only after that, use up the media allowance in one go. You'll see the output at its best, not one picture a day.
When free is the wrong question
Once you've settled on an app, the free tier stops mattering and the renewal price takes over. That's a separate calculation, laid out in what AI girlfriend apps cost.
