Every app in this space sells access in one of three ways, and each one rests on a different assumption about you.
Monthly: for people who may walk away
This costs the most per month and carries the least risk. The premium buys you the freedom to stop, and since the product behind a subscription can be reworked without warning, that freedom is worth something.
Best for: anyone in their first three months with an app, and anyone who uses it in bursts.
Annual: for people who've already stuck around
Expect a monthly rate roughly 30-50% lower. The commitment isn't the catch. What you're committing to is. Models get swapped out, content filters get retuned, and a companion who suited you in spring can come across differently by fall. None of that cancels an annual plan.
Best for: month four and beyond, on an app you've truly opened every day.
Try this test before you click: if the app switched models tomorrow and the character felt 20% different, would you still want the other eleven months? If you honestly wouldn't, pay monthly.
Credits: for people who lowball their own usage
Credits put a meter on the pricey stuff: images, voice minutes, video. They seem cheap because the starter bundle is small, and they're sold in tiers where the per-unit price drops as the bundle gets bigger. That layout is built to nudge you upward.
Two things to look for that almost never show up at checkout: whether unused credits expire, and whether a subscription comes with an allowance that resets. An app that folds media into the plan makes this whole decision disappear. That's the practical case for Candy AI over a cheaper subscription with a credit meter bolted on.
Best for: people who really do use media now and then. No one else.
The order that wastes the least
- Free tier for three days. Judge the conversation and nothing more. Some apps, such as Sweetdream, which scores 4.5 in our ranking, deserve a full two weeks on the free plan.
- One month of monthly billing. Now judge memory, repetition and media quality.
- Decide when the renewal comes, not earlier. If you opened the app on fewer than half the days, cancel.
- Annual only from month four, and only for an app that passed step three twice.
The single number to jot down
Your cost per day of actual use. A $15.99 plan you open daily works out to 53 cents a day. That same plan opened four times in a month costs $4 a visit, and no promo code changes that ratio.
Track it for a month. It settles the annual-plan question more firmly than any comparison chart, ours included.
