Memory is what makes a chatbot feel like a companion. It is also the feature you can least judge from a pricing page, since every app uses the same word for it. Only time tells the truth: chat for two weeks, then see what survives.
Our memory test
I used every app daily for two weeks on a paid plan, following the process in how we test. Early on, I dropped in a few small, specific details, such as a name, an upcoming plan and a minor worry, and never mentioned them again. During week two I tracked what happened to each one: did the character raise it unprompted, recall it only when asked, get it wrong, or lose it entirely?
For the mechanics behind all this (context windows, saved facts, summaries), read how AI companion memory works.
The scoreboard

Our two-week results, sorted into tiers. Apps inside a tier appear in alphabetical order.
| App | Behavior across the two weeks | Rating |
|---|---|---|
| Nomi | A small day-two detail resurfaced in week two, unprompted and fitting the conversation | Best |
| Camsoda AI | Each character keeps its own memory and history | Strong |
| Secret Desires | Memory survived between sessions, and long scenes held together | Strong |
| Candy AI | Good for roughly a week, then older details slipped away | Medium |
| Sweetdream | Shorter reach than Nomi; a week-old detail appeared, then vanished | Medium |
| Replika | Kept names and routines past a week, but not the small stuff | Medium |
| Kupid AI | Shallower than the leaders | Weak |
| Joi | Almost nothing carried from one session to the next | Weak |
What sets the top apps apart
Nomi builds its product around memory. In our test it did what every competitor advertises: it brought back something minor I had said one time, right when it mattered to the conversation. It also kept memories separate for different characters in group chats. The trade-offs are weaker images and a higher price than most on the list.
Camsoda AI ties memory to each character instead of the whole account. Build several companions and every one keeps its own history, so the time you invest in a character does not evaporate next session.
Secret Desires stayed consistent through long roleplay scenes. One warning before you pick it: in 2025 the platform exposed a large batch of user-generated images. Details are in AI companion data breaches.
If memory is not your priority
Want mostly images, voice and quick chats? Then memory should not decide it. Candy AI was our overall pick for putting chat, images and voice on a single plan. And if you would rather test before you spend, Sweetdream offers the free tier that is easiest to live with, and its memory is fine for casual use.
Five ways to get more from any app
- Save the must-keep facts in the memory or notes field.
- Describe personality in the character profile, and skip the fact list.
- Open a fresh chat when a long one goes off track. Memories transfer, bad habits do not. See personality drift.
- Recap in two lines when you come back after time away.
- Store your own copy of the details you care about, in case the app changes. See switching AI companion apps.
Memory shifts whenever an app swaps or updates its model, so treat these results as a snapshot of our test window. Each review lists the date we tested that app.
