In our Replika review, the verdict was that it's where most people should start, but it isn't the top companion. You get a lot of free chatting, proper iOS and Android apps and no pressure toward explicit material. Its shortcomings are the same ones that push users to look around.

The picks, one by one
Nomi, if talking was the draw. If being remembered was what you liked about Replika, this is the upgrade. I mentioned something minor on day two, and it came up again on its own during week two. The price is above most apps on the list, and pictures are weak. The comparison lives in which AI girlfriend remembers best.
Sweetdream, if the price is what pushed you out. Free here means a full product, not a teaser, and each chat opens inside a scene rather than a quiz. It remembers less than Nomi does, and long sessions start to loop.
Kupid AI, if you liked Replika living on your phone. It has true native apps, just like Replika, and its characters lean sweet rather than explicit. Paid tiers are pricey, and its memory is thinner than the leaders'.
Candy AI, if you want more than words. Nowhere else in my testing did chat, pictures of a single recognizable character and spoken replies all work under one payment. Expect a cluttered layout and a stingy free plan.
Where Replika still wins
- Beginner features: mood check-ins, a journal and avatar customization that newcomers actually use.
- Restraint: it never nudges conversations toward sex, which many people prefer.
- No-cost chatting: of the older apps we tried, its free tier was the easiest to live with.
If those are your priorities, a sensible move is keeping the free Replika account and pairing it with a second app that fills the gap.
Switching without starting over
Data can't move from one app to another, yet a character is mostly a written profile. First, before canceling:
- Jot down her personality, history, voice and the most important memories you share.
- Save a few chats, three or four, where she sounds just right.
- Want a complete archive? File a request with Replika, following how to request your data.
- Recreate her in the new app, then hold off judging for about a week.
